There are some dates that will always belong to people. It doesn’t matter if the person is here with you or not, the date is theirs. On that date everything you do, from the moment you wake up and see the numbers fall into place, will be about them.

Today is my grandmother’s birthday. There is no past tense. It will always be her birthday.

Millie has been on my mind so much this summer. I see glimpses of her bold and sharp personality in my son. I feel her every time my mother makes a pitcher of sweet tea. I catch a waft of her perfume when I open the bottom dresser drawer in my room.

Our people are always with us in our hearts and minds.
