The first year of W’s life was more exciting than I had imagined it would be. I needed help. At birth I was relieved to discover he instantly had access to public assistance health care from the state. His pediatrician was kind and helpful as I found my way with new motherhood. His first year of life included the death of the matriarch of our family, a major family crisis, and a long distance move.
Through all of this, W was happy; he was healthy. He was surrounded in love and our family was lifted up and supported. This is what we do when others need our help, we extend our hands and offer whatever we can to pull people up, pull people through.
Shot@Life (a program within the United Nations Foundation) is one of the most powerful groups I have ever had the privilege to be a part of. They established Blogust to empower bloggers to get involved with global issues and last year I was part of the group who participated.
The philosophy of Blogust is simple, it is pure: bloggers want to help and sometimes our greatest currency is how we spread the word, how we connect, how we share. This August you can experience the stories of 25 writers as they join a relay that takes us on a journey across an entire month. Every time you comment on or share a Blogust post, Walgreens will help provide a life-saving vaccine (up to 60,000) for children around the world who need them most.

During Shot@Life’s Blogust 2014—a month-long blog relay—some of North America’s most beloved online writers, photo and video bloggers and Shot@Life Champions will come together and share stories about Happy and Healthy Firsts. Every time you comment on this post and other Blogust contributions, or share them via social media on this website, Shot@Life and the United Nations Foundation pages, Walgreens will donate one vaccine (up to 60,000). Blogust is one part an overall commitment of Walgreens donating up to $1 million through its “Get a Shot. Give a Shot.” campaign. The campaign will help provide millions of vaccines for children in need around the world.
