W in greyI have appreciated hearing from you guys about how to work with W on his desire to win and be first. It’s been helpful to know that a lot of what he is going through is truly a phase of the age and something he will grow out of.

Recently someone shared something online about wishing a happy birthday season to all of the Aries and they included a link with one of those clever, “you know you are TOTALLY an Aries if…” titles. Because I was curious about what that could possibly mean I clicked on the link. I consider myself “TOTALLY a Capricorn”, truly I do. When I read about the so-called traits associated with my sign I nod enthusiastically and raise my hand, “YES!!! THAT IS ME!”

Most of the things within the link I looked at for Aries were geared towards being the life of the party and stubborn. If I squinted I could maybe see something of W in them, but not really.

I remembered the zodiac yesterday evening when I was consulting google for parenting advice. I decided to look up Aries and see what a more detailed description of the sign said.

Obviously claiming yourself as a sign is truly up to the individual, and I get that. I wouldn’t dare box W in with this at all. But reading about the sign he was born into was amazing. It was beyond eye-opening.

It also made me realize something I needed to have a better grasp on: W is going to be who he is going to be. If his nature and spirit is one to be competitive I am not going to be able to change that and I should try to. What I need to figure out is how to teach him grace and kindness and justice within competition.

Here are some of the WOW remarks that stood out for me from Astrology.com:
“Aries is the first sign of the zodiac, and that’s pretty much how those born under this sign see themselves: first.”

So. Right off the bat there’s that. W’s desire to be first could be deeply hard-wired.

“Much of Aries’ drive to compete and to win comes from its Cardinal Quality.”

uh…I need to look up cardinal quality. Supposedly Capricorns have this as well.

“While a common Aries refrain might well be ‘me first,’ there’s no point in arguing with them since, in their minds, they are first. Is this unbridled ego? Maybe, but that might be what it takes to blaze a new trail.”

DUDE. When I read this I realized something. Along with W’s desire to be first, he also loves to discover and find. He is AMAZING at finding things and he takes such delight in being the one to find a missing sock or find the hidden object in a drawing. He also has a true spirit of adventure and I have heard him say, “we are the 1st people to find this!”

I don’t like thinking of my kid as a puzzle to solve, but I recognize that he is speaking his own language and to know him better I want to learn more about what makes him tick. This stuff about being an Aries could simply be a cool coincidence, but it has been one of the first moments in a while where I felt like I cracked some code.
