So we have all been there. That moment when your computer sort of fizzles or the photo storage place you love goes out of business… and suddenly PANIC. Serious panic.
A few years ago the external hard drive to my laptop started clicking and then all of a sudden I could no longer access it. I called a computer tech person and he had me bring it down to his shop. I had W bouncing on my hip, had piles of work to do, but my entire world was stopped because my entire digital world was now in the hands of a stranger in a cubical. The tech finally told me he could, at best, extract data from one month of the drive. I two years of my digital life on there: photos, music, home movies, short stories. But I picked the month that I could never replace: April, 2009. The month my son was born.
I heard about CrashPlan after doing research for a secure and cloud-based backup program that would work on multiple computers. I wanted something that would work for my computer as well as Mom’s. And, in case of emergency, I needed to be able to access the backup anywhere. I also like that you can set a backup to happen on another computer. So I can have a backup of my Mom’s computer on my machine. I can also have a backup on my account in Dropbox.
CrashPlan has a free option that is a way for you to set up and create backups within a network of computers.
