I’m going orange for Hunger Action month. Orange is said to be a happy color filled with enthusiasm and joy. It is also meant to be a color that can stimulate and increase your appetite. So now let’s talk about hunger. But beyond that, let’s talk about how YOU can get involved this month.

The purpose of Hunger Action month is to be the voice for people who can not speak – the over 49 million food insecure families in America.

From Feeding America: “They live in our communities; they are our neighbors, our co-workers, and our friends, yet their struggles can go unheard. By simply lending your voice, you can make a tangible contribution to mobilizing the public in the fight to end hunger.”

How Can Bloggers Help?

Talk about hunger issues on your social networks. Is there a local food bank in your community? Reach out to them and see if they have any projects going on this month. Dedicate a tweet or blog post to your food bank or whatever organization is helping your neighborhood or community.

{If you live in Philadelphia get ready! I will be talking about specific ways that YOU can jump in and help this month!}

Go orange. Just by simply changing a color on your blog or site you are helping bring attention to hunger action month. (Why yes I AM orange plaid this month!)

Share hunger facts or videos. Feeding America has made it easy for you to share information and get involved. Go to their HungerAction site and find your local food bank, pledge to join the movement for a hunger-free America, and find videos that you can watch and then share with friends and family.

September 6th is a big deal. If you do one thing this month for Hunger Action do it on September 6th. We are hoping to have as many voices as possible.

Tour your local food bank. Find out when you can tour, volunteer, or drop off donations. While you are at your local bank ask them about their paper plate campaign.

Fill out a paper plate. Post the photo on facebook or your blog.

Here is a great video explaining the paper plate campaign last year:

Go orange on twitter or facebook. Dedicate your avatar to hunger action for the month of September. If you want to change your cover photo on Facebook feel free to use this image that I created. (when you click on the image below the cover image will pop up and you can drag that to your desktop and save it.)

Tell your story. If you have ever been food insecure or helped others that have NOW is the time to tell your story. One of the biggest reasons why I talk about my family’s time on food stamps is to let others know that they are not alone. There is no shame in needing help. If you have a story to share I would love to include it in the In Times Like These series. You can email me about that.

Don’t wait to be asked. Chances are you know someone in your community that needs your help. Don’t wait for them to ask for help. Invite them over for a meal (and make sure they know not to bring anything but conversation). Talk to your school about food programs that could use your help. Purchase gift cards to a restaurant and give them to a family in your neighborhood. No questions. Just give.

Show kindness. The family with coupons in front of you at the checkout, the woman counting her dollars and then putting a food item back on the shelf, the family breaking up their purchases by WIC coupons…All they need from you is kindness. A soft smile.

If you write a post about Hunger Action month let me know so that I can share it.
