not working at homeThe other day someone introduced me as a work at home mom. I had a good chuckle over that. Me? A work at home mom? Hardly. But people don’t often realize that there is an option C in the “work at home mom” vs “work away from home” labeling. I am a woman who works at home. And I am a mom. I am seldom both at the same time.

{I am both today and already I can tell that I am not doing a very good job.}

I am, in the work/parent scenario incredibly lucky because I chose this. I knew I didn’t want a full 40 hours a week in an office so I work 30 at home.

There are some issues with being an at-home worker. Things that people just assume and I have to laugh. Because…seriously?

1) Just because I am home all day does not mean that:
• the laundry will be done
• the dishes washed
• the beds made

2) Just because I am home all day does not mean that:
• I watch tv all day (I actually don’t have the tv on at all when I am alone working)
• I can fart around on the interwebs (you should see the list of friends I owe e-mails!)
• I luxuriate with mid day mani/pedis (I seldom leave my desk chair once I sit down)

3) Just because I am home all day does not mean that:
• I shower
• I put on a bra
• I put on shoes

4) Just because I am home all day does not mean that:
• I have time to make phone calls
• I have time to go shopping
• I have time to meet people for lunch/coffee

5) Just because I am home all day does not mean that:
• I am working on supper
• I am eating breakfast
• I am eating lunch

Now don’t get me wrong, there are some TOTAL super stars out there that are able to do it all, and do it all well – hats off to them! I just know that when I am in work mode I am working. And I work my ASS off. And I do this so that when I pick up W at 3pm it can be our time, us time.

What is your dream work situation? Are you living it?
