http://oascentral.blogher.org/RealMedia/ads/adstream_jx.ads/blogher.org/MaryKay_May11_Review_036/@x13By the end of the year I am going to be a total expert on this makeup stuff. Seriously. I’m approaching this new attitude of caring about my appearance bit by bit and trying out as many products as possible so that I can figure out what works for me and what doesn’t. BlogHer asked me if I was interested in trying out some new products from Mary Kay and my mind immediately went to the pink Cadillac place. No way was I a Mary Kay kind of gal. But then my curiosity won me over and I had to know what this brand was really like.

A beautifully wrapped box arrived at my door (one of those, “is it my birthday??!” type boxes) and when I pulled back the pink tissue paper I was surprised to find some pretty hip-looking products: a microdermabrasion kit, a mascara, a lipstick, and an eye shadow/ blush combo compact. Since it is that quirky time of year where my skin is transitioning from super oily to normal to sometimes dry, I was really excited to try a home microdermabrasion kit. I washed my face with my own cleanser and then applied step one to my wet face. I have to say it was a bit of a power trip to control where I focused my scrub and how much pressure I applied. I followed up with the step two serum. I am really weird about moisturizers because of my combo skin. If I use something too thick my face just feels like it has a turtleneck on it. This serum was super light and absorbed into my skin instantly. (my biggest problem is that the scrub made my face so smooth that I kept touching my cheeks to feel the softness)

marykay-mascaraThe mascara was dark black and went on easily. The wand was one of the skinny types – which I have discovered I prefer over those giant wands that look like they could also comb your hair. Check out how fancy-pants I look putting it on! If I have learned anything in the last few months it is that mascara is my friend. Wearing a darker shade took some getting used to. I still don’t know if I am supposed to acknowledge that I am wearing mascara or if it is one of those products you don’t reference (like concealer).

bright-lipstickThe lipstick was a shade that I have never tried before. I don’t think I am a fuchsia-shade kind of person, but I put it on and decided to own it. I obviously need lots of nudging when it comes to makeup so maybe a fuchsia-colored nudge would work for me. It was a super creamy lipstick, not drying at all, and every time I passed a mirror it was the first thing I saw on my face. Is that a good thing? I have no idea!

marykay-compactThe compact is really clever as it combines eye shadow and blush in one small package. I was a total newbie mess with eye shadow and blush. (um, am I supposed to apply the eye shadow before the mascara, right?) The colors were very soft and simple and I look forward to putting them in the hands of my mother and asking her to show me how to apply them. Seriously – I had a panic attack over the application of blush! Where does it go????!!!!

When I dropped W off at preschool this morning the administrator in the school office smiled at me. I smiled back. She asked, “Do you have a conference today?” I blinked back sort of blankly then I realized – the makeup! With just a few products I had crossed over from schlubby Mom to “conference” Mom. Not bad. BlogHer and Mary Kay want to give one of my readers a $100 gift basket full of Mary Kay products!

To win leave a comment telling me how to apply eye shadow! (or you can just tell me which Mary Kay product you would like to try)
