My in-laws taught their children (my husband) the importance of being self-reliant like yourself, and are currently in your same situation work wise. It has been more than 2 years applying for jobs they are "overqualified" for or working any temporary position possible. They have no debt, are living off dwindling savings, have not had to apply for government assistance...yet, but cannot find a job. As their son, my husband works very hard and has decided not to apply for gvt. aid like so many college students around us. (so they don't have to work while going to school) We believe that it is for people like yourself and so many others to get the help they need. I love your optimism in the midst of a very difficult situation. It is so good to see someone that still tries to live frugally even though their supplemental income is not their own. I have found that during my hardest trials I have learned the greatest lessons, mostly things I would not ever have the opportunity to learn had I not had that specific trial. Do you find that some of the frugal living skills you have learned will remain with you even if your financial situation improves?

I am so glad you are writing about these issues, Dresden. I am generally sympathetic to what you have to say -- but your posts are still eye-opening & a learning experience for me. Thank you.

we all got to do what we got to do. I have 2 degrees and going through the work program. we are on food stamps.
we are attached with a stigma.. ones who are trying but yet gets pushed down
and thats sad.
I am over qualified but not enough experience. I get the interviews but no calls backs. Is its hard ? yes But i am keeping hope in there that one day soon, i will have a job that pays and not just a min wage job .

You know I am a kindred spirit/ fellow traveler along this road, the one that does a hairpin twist and drops you completely out of sight from the world as you've known it, and then trails you through the depths and darkness of SHOCK and despair. And it wasn't your fault, or mine, or our families.

I applaud your swiftly realized mad skills of not only survival but also sense of opportunity and determination. Bless you, and thank you so much for sharing. We live it and we own it -- the circumstances and their challenge, but let's turn our backs on any shame while we pity those who don't (yet) understand how THIS could happen to anyone.
