Polling & Photo Friday stuff…

The photo friday site is back up for your showcased viewing pleasure. I still have to work on fine tuning the template (which I did not create), but the key elements that I was looking for are now there. Please go check it out & see the showcased photos by Klove & Chicory. The new theme is also posted there. (it’s a good one!)

And just how does a theme get selected? Well that is up to you guys.  The photographer that you select as the one to be showcased then gets the fun responsibility of creating a theme for the following week. I will never put my name in this hat, even though I do appreciate the photo feed back. Photo Friday has been going on for well over 2 years and coming up with themes every week is ridiculously hard. I love the themes that you guys have selected these past couple of months. Go you.

This past week there were so so many amazing photos submitted. It was very inspiring to see so many points of view. I love that. Please go to the photo pool and review the photos submitted for the theme of Geometry. Then come back here & vote for the photographer that captured the theme in your favorite way.

Photo Friday: Geometry

face mosaic

It’s a Poll. It’s a Theme.

Lazy git that I am I have yet to start finish the new layout for the photo friday site. This means that you will, once again, be presented with the new theme for photo friday here. And not over there. I am sure I am the only one bothered by this…

The new theme for this week comes from Shanghai Louise and I think it is one of those themes that will be really fun to explore: Geometry. When I think of geometry I immediately think of the math that nearly destroyed me. I’m totally an algebra gal. But geometry is effing everywhere and I really look forward to seeing what you guys can photograph.

1. the branch of mathematics that deals with the deduction of the properties, measurement, and relationships of points, lines, angles, and figures in space from their defining conditions by means of certain assumed properties of space.
2. any specific system of this that operates in accordance with a specific set of assumptions: Euclidean geometry.
3. the study of this branch of mathematics.
4. a book on this study, esp. a textbook.
5. the shape or form of a surface or solid.
6. a design or arrangement of objects in simple rectilinear or curvilinear form.

Now please go here and have a look around at all of the amazing photographs for last week’s theme: In Motion. Pretty great collection, right?

Please vote for the photographer that captured the theme well for you.

The Theme, The love for DST & The Poll

I’m going to be putzing around with the template for the main photo friday site this week so while that place is in pre-construction I figured I would go ahead and announce this week’s Photo Friday theme over here. The theme is brought to us by the amazing Niobe: In Motion.

Yesterday I decided to download a 30 day free trial version of the $999 version of Photoshop. Oh man is it fun as hell. This is all part of my master March plan of trying to not be only one thing and to embrace something (photography) that makes me happy. I have been playing around with tutorials (hence yesterday’s pet photos) and Niobe’s new theme makes me excited to see what this software can do.

Here is where I tell you how much I love Daylight Savings Time…at least for one specific reason: GM is still asleep! Getting up some days is really hard (hello depression) but getting up super early because I can hear GM getting up is the worst. We have been pondering how much her sleep patterns are due to light. In the deep winter she has pretty extreme sun-downing- meaning if it gets dark she basically powers down and either gets agitated or she falls asleep.

So in conjunction with the time change Mother decided to add darker curtains to GM’s room to see if she would sleep in longer. Now we are not trying to get GM to sleep all day- that would freak me out. But she has not been getting a good night’s sleep because as soon as it is light in her room she makes herself wake up.  If I can get her to sleep until 9am then maybe she won’t need to go to bed so early (we’re talking 4 or 5 pm).

And now…the poll.

Photo Friday: Touch

water touches the sand

Thank you for all of the kind and honest comments yesterday. I am going to take you up on the daily photo concept as I think it will feed my creative soul. I was supposed to meet with my Doc this morning to discuss how the Z was treating me, but due to all of the tornado warnings/watches and shitty weather in the area I moved the appointment to Monday morning. GM in a wheelchair with an umbrella in the rain is not something on the top 100 list of fun things to deal with.

I am going to ask the doc to talk to me about other anti-D options. The Z seems to have lifted my worst stormy moments, but I am left in a haze with sore joints and a never ending feeling of blah-ness. I know that these pills don’t turn on the happy, but I feel like the Z is adding some sluggishness that wasn’t there before. I’m going to ask, again, about trying the generic Wellbutrin. (bonus side effect is weight loss)

Tuesday’s Tallying, etc.

This weekend I got a random refund check in the mail from a place I had never heard of. I wanted to just thank the random Gods, deposit the check and move on about my March. But then Mother had to get all clever on me with her movie plot notions that it could be a scam check or a mistake check or an oscar winning check (sorry, bad pun). It was enough to make me realize that with the sort of luck I have had within this era of my life if I deposited the check it most likely would end up as some sort of major drama and hell.

I did much internet researching on the name (a series of initials) and address (a state I never lived in) of the check and came up with nothing familiar. Clearly it was some sort of voodoo check that if deposited would trigger a series of horrific and lifetime movie worthy events.

Yesterday, after looking at the check sitting all casual on my desk I noticed that it had a major bank name on it. I thought if I called the bank maybe they could break the anagram for me and at least clue me in on the legitimacy of this paper annoyance. Or maybe I would be the hero figure helping break an international check forgery ring. There might be a reward. You never know with these things.

(and just to be clear, this is, by no means, a whopping, change your life sort of check. it’s maybe a week’s worth of groceries including a cheap bottle of wine)

It took forever to get a human being at the bank. There really isn’t an automated prompt for people trying to verify if a check is legit. I finally had to be sneaky and pretend I was looking for a new home equity loan to get a real live person on the phone. It took less than 1 minute (me relaying the series of numbers at the bottom of the check and her typing it in) to verify that the check was real.

Somehow I am the recipient of a refund from a medical test I had nearly four years ago. Four. That is weird, right? But I’ll take it and chalk it up to some sort of ripple in a wave in the ocean.

It’s a Meme! Because I am a giant needy dork I must tell you how geeked out I was to actually be selected to participate in a meme. Seriously. No one ever picks my sorry ass and I was starting to get a complex. Now, thanks to Laura, I feel like I got picked for the kickball team. Yay.

Step 1. Reference back to the blog that sent you
Step 2. Make a list of 5 things that you have to get done this week, no matter how small
Step 3. Get 2 other people off their asses to get their shit in order :)

  1. I must empty out the fridge
  2. I should deposit the random refund check
  3. I want to make a burrito dinner
  4. I need to fill up the car with gas before the price goes up more
  5. I would like to spend thursday afternoon taking photographs

I know, not such a groovy or fun list, but that’s my life: neither groovy nor fun. I am tagging Sarah Solitaire and The Family O. Also, let me know if you, like me, never get tagged and we can spend the week tagging the crap out of each other.

Now for the Tally-Ho event of the week. (no, I did not just call you a ho. calm down.) Please put on your vintage polka dot swimwear and dive into our photo friday pool. Do a few laps and enjoy the arty and clever contributions of the week and then towel off and come back here to vote. The photographer with the most votes will win creative control for the following week.

Go to the Main Photo Friday Site to see this week’s theme.  I am looking forward to seeing how you guys capture the theme. Heh.

The polling and the fretting

There is a fretting post coming about the IVF sitch but as I did not sleep very well (could be because of anxiety or could be because I watched 3 episodes in a row of Dexter right before I went to bed)you will have to wait a few hours before I can write it. But just to unload some of the angst, things are not looking good. As in it most probably won’t be able to happen. ugh infinity.

Because I am too damn lazy to come up with a swank transition, let’s immediately go to the fun zone and talk about Photo Friday. This past week was one of the most participated themes ever. I can not tell you how amazing it was to see all of your stunning work on such a beautiful theme. It is going to be difficult to select just one photographer to showcase.

So I have decided this week we will showcase two. That’s right, you can now vote for two photographers. Start at the photo friday pool and then come back here (some of them spill over to page 2) and cast a vote for your two favorite photographers this week.

Next week’s theme is up and ready for you at the Photo Friday Site. Have a peak and start taking photos.

Photo Friday: Tranquility

perfect unseen flower

The other day I took GM to the beach. We both needed to get out of the house and I had a deep desire to see something vast and unending. We took a shortcut there and on the way we stopped at a traffic light. Looking to the right I was surprised to see what looked like a tucked away cemetery. I knew then that when I had a chance that I would go back and explore. Thursday, when my afternoon of respite provided me with the luxury of a few hours to myself, I went to the cemetery and found peace.

Tranquility, if you will.

When I was a young girl I went to many cemeteries with my Grandparents. Both of them were amazing genealogists and we spent many a weekend either paying respect to family members or hunting up the markers of possible relations. A cemetery was a place of calm and quiet, but it was also always inspiring to me. As my Grandparents tended to markers I would walk between the graves and read aloud the names and wonder what sort of life they had had.

I remember always being shaken by doing the math and discovering that someone my age or younger was below my feet. Death was not something that was supposed to happen to young girls and it always troubled me to see that contradicted.

The cemetery that I explored yesterday was pretty much in a sad state of neglect. There was litter everywhere and overgrown shrubs and untended grass. It was dark under the shade of massive trees and hanging moss; dark and quiet and peaceful.

I figured I would get a few photos of some older graves, but the more I walked around the more I became involved with the stories that were everywhere. So I began to take photos of everything: the statues, the figures, the dead flowers blanketing headstones. In the middle of the cemetery was a cluster of camellia shrubs sorely in need of attention. The ground was covered with rotting and dead blooms, but tucked in, still firmly attached, perched the most perfect flowers I had ever seen. I was so moved by how special it was that I was getting to see such beauty. What a gift it was, an unexpected moment just for me.

It made me think about all of the things in my week that had led up to this experience: the horrible days with GM, the coaxing GM to the car and then to the beach…the Muriels coming up with a theme that had stuck in my head like a planted seed, and then the determination that I would leave my house with the camera.

You can view a partial set of more cemetery photos here. And to see Elowyn’s Showcased Photo you can go here.
