Feeding Marshall: how I save money at the pump (Sweepstakes)

Feeding Marshall: how I save money at the pump (and you can too!)

We name all of our cars, we always have. When we said goodbye to Millie’s Cadillac and got a proper family-style car we gave W naming rights. It was on the journey home that he announced the name to our new used car. “Marsha Ro!” is what he squealed from the back seat. Our GPS had just alerted us that we would soon be making a turn onto Marshall Road. “Marsha Ro!” and he clapped. That is when we realized that W had named our car Marshall Road.

We talk about Marshall as if he is part of our family. Usually in terms of not kicking Marshall and not getting Marshall dirty. We also talk about when Marshall gets hungry. Due to convenience he only eats at one place as there is only one gas station that is on the route between our house and W’s school some twenty minutes away. That gas station happens to be a Shell, or, as W calls it, “Yellow Store!”

The price of gas is something that can make us all groan, regardless of where we get it. We are always trying to find ways to drive less or drive more efficiently, but the bottom line is, for my family, feeding Marshall is expensive.

I discovered the Fuel Rewards Network™ program, or FRN™ program, months ago. After seeing the prompt on the display at the pump asking me every time I pulled up if I had a rewards card I got curious. I thought it was something you had to buy into, or a credit card. I didn’t get what it was until I checked out their website. I cannot believe I did not sign up sooner for this.

So here’s the deal: if you sign up and then you shop online you can save money on gas.

And I’m not just talking a few pennies. Members are saving, on average, $0.31 per gallon (according to fuelrewards.com on 5/6/13). That seriously adds up. All you do is sign up (it’s free) and shop at the places online that you are already buying from.

There are over 700 vendors in the FRN Online Mall so the way that you earn rewards is by logging into the rewards network first and then clicking on the site that you want to make a purchase from. A new window pops open and you shop from there. You earn 5¢/gal or more for every $50 spent. Your reward points show up about 3 days later in your account, although some of mine have taken a bit longer.

I am going to spell this out for you in some math terms. Say you click on a link to a tech vendor in the “mall” that says “2x Rewards” next to its name. A quick pop-up will let you know that a new window is about to open and if there are any special deals or restrictions. Once it opens you can start shopping. Let’s say you decide to treat yourself to a fancy $200 tablet for Mother’s day. At 2x the rewards that’s 10¢/gal savings for this particular purchase. That’s 40¢ off each gallon of gas when you next fill up.

The list of vendors are all familiar to you. All of the go-to family and Mom online shopping places are there. This is really one of those no-brainer kind of multi-tasking/money saving programs that I feel lucky to have found.

Feeding Marshall costs us a lot less now. It also kind of makes going to the pump fun because there is this element of “how much am I going to save!?” thrill added. For the most part, we all shop online, we all need gas, and we ALL need to save money. This is just a simple program that combines it all.

The place where we live is riddled with politics between gas companies and car manufacturers so that consumers keep spending money on cars and gas and they are not allowing the govt to construct subways for consumers to commute to work.
