About six months ago I wrote a post sharing all of the great music for kids that you guys told me about. I listened to the songs, played some for W, but at the end of the day I couldn’t get away from the fact that they were KID SONGS.
W and I are radio people. If I hear a song I like I turn it up and yell to the backseat, “Mama likes this song!” Now when W hears a song he likes he says, “This is MY like song!” If he doesn’t like a song (and I have not expressed called dibs on listening to it) he will ask for new music. (which sounds a lot like, “NOOOOO!!! NOT THIS ONE!!!”)
A few weeks ago I started paying attention to the songs he loved and began scribbling them down with the goal of one day making him his very own mixed CD. That day finally arrived this morning.
We sat down with my computer and we hand-picked songs just for him. Sure the Sesame Street songs are what you might call kid-centric, but I dare any grown up to not dig the Will.i.am song!
Without further ado, here is W’s very first (OMG!!) playlist:
Music For W
I love Rock`n`roll
The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song
we will rock you
Life Is A Highway
Vanilla Ice
Three is a magic number
Cars Movie -Real Gone
Sesame Street- Will.i.am’s Song What I Am
Werewolves Of London
Sesame Street- Outdoors with Jason Mraz
Forget You – Camilla and the Chickens
Garbage Truck (Beck Version)
Crazy Little Thing Called Love

Lolly, Lolly, Lolly, Get Your Adverbs Here
Crocodile Rock

Obviously I will need to start working on version 2.
So what are you and your kid listening to right now?

W has great taste!
I do not have any children yet, but this is a great list!
I love this idea!
We aren’t car music people, I usually listen to books on CD, so I am no help for version two.
great list of music! right now my girls are into Adele and Meet Me in St. Louis(from the film). I am happy to send you the children’s music I write if you’d like a listen! happy momming. DP
Yeah, we listen to inappropriate pop music here, so my girl LOVES Katy Perry. But right now, her favorites are Glad You Came by The Wanted and Starships by Nicki Minaj…oh, and that Call Me Maybe earworm…
She likes to tell me to stop singing, so when a song I like comes on, her first words are “I get to sing it!” So it gets pretty loud in the car when Gotye’s Somebody That I Used To Know comes on…
My nephews (2 & 5) both really love this band called recess monkeys. They are a kid music group, but they are really pretty good!
Most excellent playlist! We are actually “off” music right now and have been listening to stories. I bought The Who his first book on CD for our road trip last month and he loved it, so I recorded and burned 8 more (just me reading — no great shakes) and he is a little obsessed.
My 4 year old enjoys “I Love Rock n Roll” and “Werewolves of London” so I am thinking we should try the others. Currently listening to a cd made by my brother in law with some interesting tunes with Little River Band and Carlies Simon.
Cute!
My daughter loves pop music too. She loves to sing her little heart out in the car even if it isn’t always the right lyrics, she tells me but mama I got the melody down.
We love Katy Perry, Black Eyed Peas, Zac brown band (chicken fried), oh the list goes on…but since she really does get some of the lyrics right we had to move onto the kid version…kid bop- which is a g rated version of pop music sung by kids. Because my daughter was making me red faced as she would sing “melt your popsicle” in front of her 85 year old grandmother. Her teachers really loved when she taught her friends “cold beer on a friday night, pair of jeans that fit just right”.
We looove the Sesame Street songs! Current faves are: Feist’s “1234″ and OK Go’s “Three Primary Colors” (which has an awesome video). R’s never gotten into the Will.i.am song, but has recently started liking Bruno Mars’ “Don’t Give Up” (which I can’t stand).
Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows
Love love love, I need to add it to my mix CD I made for my niece and nephew-message me your address and I will make you a copy!
My kid loves Adele’s Set Fire to the Rain, and she love Gotye’s Sombody I Used to Know. Unfortunately I have to listen to them over and over. Occasionally she will listen to her kids CD.
My husband is always playing “his” music for my 2 yo and she loves it. Some non-kid-music favs for our toddler include:
Iron Butterfly – In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida (drum solo!)
anything Beach Boys
anything ska
But we also totally dig Raffi
I like this list! Werewolfs of London, The Yeah Yeah Song and Sunday Morning! Very nice. I’ll re-post this if I may.
