1) Who knew so many of you guys had Wisconsin connections?! To fill in the rest of you there is a job there that Mother is a good fit for. Mother applied for the job. After she got an e-mail rejection she later got an e-mail from their HR asking her to apply as they had seen her resume on Monster. She applied in response to the e-mail. She never heard back. The other day she got another e-mail from their HR saying they had seen her resume and would she please apply. So she has.
I just feel like this is another moment in the modern job search world where people are not being SEEN because of robot resume scanners. So my plea for waves from the WI was an attempt to find anyone with a possible connection to this company that could put Mother’s resume in the hands of a human.
2) I got the blue one! (the tray only comes in white, but the blue/white combo is cute. I did have a moment of wanting a red/white combo so I could call it W’s peppermint high chair…but I got the blue.)
3) I have organic apples. But I will still peel them. It is kind of not even important yet as W still has no interest in holding the mesh thing when he has me to do it for him.
4) I FINALLY remembered what commercial it was! It was one of the new Old Navy commercials. You know, the one with the mannequins? HOLY SHIT. Creepy. Right? I feel like these commercials and all geico ads should go away.
5) Even though it wasn’t technically a weekend I am counting Friday as my weekend, “I did something!” day. W and I drove down to Orlando and had lunch with Barb, Jen and Elizabeth. Then we went to the place that should have a ting sound every time you see its name. IKEA. ting! Ah…..IKEA. People that live in a town with an IKEA are so effing lucky. I would probably explode if I lived in a town that had an IKEA, Trader Joe’s and H&M. Seriously- who has all three??? I want to move there.
6) I am so glad that October is predicted to be good for so many of you. Sue better not be wrong!
And before I blast you with photos how about a poll. Because, seriously, a LOT of you live in the midwest. Well at least more than I would have guessed. So let’s find out you live! bwha ha ha.
And now…photos!
I get the middle finger in the rug department at IKEA:

That’s pretty bizarre about the resume thing. I’d say snail mail, phone call, and email all at the same time. Worked for me!
Move to NJ! I have a Trader Joe’s (with liquor license) within walking distance, an Ikea about 20 minute’s drive one way (actually 2 are pretty close) and H&M 20 minute’s drive the other way! Plus NYC just short commute away…
It was super fun! I had a good time and W looks so cute in his new high chair.
Dude, I hate those Old Navy commercials with the heat of a thousand suns. I’m boycotting Old Navy until they go away.
emeryville, ca (east sf bay, between oakland and berkeley) has an h&m, tj’s AND ikea, all within easy walking distance from each other.
I agree with the snail mail idea. Also, email the HR contact, telling them that you’re (she) very excited about the possibility, yada yada. Attatch the resume, and all info from their application.
We’ve got all three.
Several of each, in fact.
Hey – did you check out kids woot today??
http://kids.woot.com
Hilarious photos!
Honey? NYC.
we’ve got all three, within 1 mile of each ohter, plus a california pizza kitchen!
I love those IKEA high chairs — so cute!
Who is the one reader of your blog living in Antarctica?! Who are you, Antarctica?! I think that’s cool. Are you a researcher? You don’t have to answer, but you’ve piqued my curiosity!
I’m in New England and we have no big chain stores here, no IKEA or H&M but we do have a Trader Joes 10 minutes from my house and I have now vowed never to live more than 10 minutes from a Trader Joes. I love that place!
I have an Ikea 15 minutes away, an H&M about 2 minutes away and a Trader Joe’s about 10 minutes away. Actually there are three Trader Joe’s each about 10 minutes apart so you can choose. But I have to say that the parking lots of all three are usually a giant cluster F. And I swear when you asked about the commercial I almost said something about the creepy Old Navy one but I went with the cool Prius one instead. Damn! I could have won a prize!
And what food did you start W on? I gave The Girl some rice cereal mixed with breast milk today and she looked horrified when eating it. She promptly barfed about 10 minutes after I gave up. I think that might be a sign?
The new W photos are so cute, he has the best expressions!
I told you, come to Atlanta! We have all 3 and much, much more!
Yes, who’s from Antarctica or the North/South Poles? And pardon my ignorance, but what’s H & M? We have IKEA and Trader Joe’s and other cool stuff here in the Phoenix area.
We have an Ikea and a Trader Joes, and we’re supposed to be getting an H&M soon. My daughter is thinking about getting a job at Ikea. I live in Ohio, near Cincinnati.
I loathe those Old Navy commercials too!
Love IKEA, but dh won’t go near the place… & I don’t drive. So it’s been awhile since I’ve been there!
I’m in HR, so I can tell you this with confidence. GO AROUND HR. Get her resume to the actual hiring manager, STAT. Do whatever stupid, clearly broken process HR wants you to do, AND get on LinkedIn and/or the company website to find out who the hiring manager might be, and send a snail mail AND an email copy of her resume. Include in the awesome customized cover letter that their had been a mixup or two with HR and that you just wanted to make sure your resume got in front of the actual hiring manager, too. (Careful though, don’t make HR look bad or they’ll sink you later.) Also say that you’ll follow up with a cal in a week and then do it. And call again until you get the actual hiring manager on the phone.
This may sound aggressive. It is. But it’s not desperate, and if someone else is doing these things and you’re not, you may not get the job, even though you may be a better fit and better qualified.
If your mom contacts me I might be able to help her figure out who the hiring manager is. Good luck!
Move to the Twin Cities and you’ll have all three stores (plus many more), in addition to incredible foliage (I live on the Mississippi and have a great view every day), we have fantastic regional theater, access to a wide variety of the arts, liberal folks, very family friendly neighborhoods, and great food.
Hmm, I’m starting to re-think my placement. AM I in the Southeast or Southwest? Austin is TECHNICALLY in the east of Texas, and since Texas is so big, does that mean it gets split up into two categories? Hmm… PONDER.
P.S. I love any picture where the baby may or may not be screaming at the camera/parent. ROCKON W!
Great choice in a chair.
I chose SE, but I will soon live in the MW
You are going to love the high chair. We do!
See that’s why you need to move to Philly – IKEAs are close (like 15 minutes away!!), Trader Joe’s & Whole Foods, and an H&M with a kids section. Score!
Barrage WI job with snail mail, email and HR followup.
My husband has been on the job search lately, and here’s what we’ve learned about resumes…it’s all about the proper key words. I’m sure there’s some sort of algorithm in place now that scans resumes for the proper arrangement of words. So, if your mom’s resume is not getting through, find a live person to FAX it to. Or use snail mail, but that can end up getting lost too.
Also, Wisconsin? It’s like the opposite of FL. If I had one of the email jokes that starts off expounding about the beautiful snow in October and ends up with F***ing snow in May, I would send it to you.
