When I see you smile…

by on May 14, 2009

It started happening a few days ago. W is smiling! And holy shit people- having a smiling baby is the most indescribable thing ever. Being able to talk to him and jiggle his feet and then see a grin that goes from one end of his face to the other is the best moment of my life.

And of course I spent the greater part of yesterday trying to capture one of these smiles on film so that ya’ll can share in the moment. I was always like 4 seconds behind each grin and only seemed to get the confused look of, “why are you always pointing that damn thing at me?”.

I think I managed to get enough of it to illustrate just how awesome the moment is. I also got his other funny pose that we call, “power to the people”.

Things are going pretty well with W. We had a rough couple of days where he would have these giant melt downs and I could not calm him down. That kills me- when he is screaming and wailing and I can’t find the magic series of events that will soothe him. It seems to be connected to napping and hunger. If he naps just a minute or two too long he wakes up VERY hungry and very disgruntled (understandably) about that. However if I wake him up too soon from his nap he is the definition of cranky. We are working on finding the right balance.

He seems to be getting longer and longer and we just sent off some too small IVP clothes to some friends. Totally surreal to move up in sizing already. I mean as much as I can’t wait to have a conversation with my son and get to know his personality, I also am trying to soak up as much of his newborn moments as possible.

And at what point is he no longer newborn?

He really loves chilling in his swing. Thank goodness for that as it is my little bit of on-line time. He is in the swing right now freaking out over the fact that HE HAS HANDS! He also loves soaking in his tub. Not that we are a bathe every day family at the moment, but when he was having his melt downs the other day it was nice to get him out of his panic and into a nice soak.

And now the photos!

Have you read anything on wonder weeks? I don’t know if that is what WW is doing but he will hit them eventually and is almost spot on for the 5-week one. They are these “milestones” babies hit in which they are fussier than usual. It usually precedes some leap in cognitive ability and they come pretty close together when they are little. You can google the wonder weeks or go to Ask Moxie and read about them. I was always floored when we would hit one of those and then would get about a day in and was like “Oh yeah.” It helps just knowing it is a temporary thing but I remember those times involved lots of holding and crying in my kiddo who rarely cried (very disconcerting). Here is some basic info: http://www.cyh.com/HealthTopics/HealthTopicDetails.aspx?p=114&np=122&id=2312 AND http://www.askmoxie.org/2008/01/wonder-weeks-li.html

Smiling ROCKS. We’re about 6 weeks ahead of you and the smiles just get better. We’re now getting the little squeal of delight and almost laughing. Can’t wait for the laugh. It just gets better.

My daughter would have her meltdowns at dinner time. Every day for like two weeks! We’d ALL have to take turns walking her around and eating. It was stressful, but thankfully it didn’t last long. Plus it got to be the norm. He is so beautiful, I love the smiles! Too cute!

Oh, the smile…there is nothing better in the world. I remember it from my son, and I am anxiously awaiting the day when my new daughter rewards me with one as well. She smiles at my boobs currently, but I guess that is to be expected as they are MUCH more exciting than Mommy right now. Congrats on getting to that fabulous next stage!

Oh, that is just scrumptious! I love the fist in the air – my nephew used to do that, too, and his other grandparents (my sister’s in-laws) used to hate all our socialist/revolutionary references!

That’s called the “Swordsman posture.” My mom told me once that it has some infant neurological development significance that I now can’t remember. She and I don’t usually just sit around and talk about infant brain development; a New York Magazine cover shortly after the election had a photo of a baby in an Obama onesie making that pose (http://nymag.com/nymag/toc/2008/index3.html). Pretty cool.

Very cute smilage! Sol had a “power to the people” pose too, to which we’d alternatively exclaim “PTTP!” or “Solid!”
