Help is just a phone call away.

by on January 12, 2009

So yeah, not AS cranky as I was a few hours ago. I decided to harness the power of my crank and use it for good. This meant that I sat down and made two phone calls. Phone call #1 was to GM’s doctor. It was your basic, “What the HELL is the hold up, people?!” call. But, you know, nicer. I was put on hold and as I waited I told myself to calm down. I was now in proactive mode and nothing could stop me.

The nurse came back and said that someone would be calling me today to set up a hospice consult. Suuuuuuuure, I thought. But I thanked the nurse and hung up, eager to make my next call.

Call #2 of the morning was to a nursing home within our zip code that specializes in Alzheimer’s/dementia care. I left a detailed message with admissions basically BEGGING someone to help us figure out insurance and logistic questions. If I could secure GM a spot at this place for a month or two in the Spring I will feel so much better.

Two hours later my phone was ringing. Hospice! I spoke to a nice lady that scheduled an in-home consult for us tomorrow at 11:30am. It will basically be a nurse coming to check on GM and see what level of care/help we need. I have NO idea what to expect in terms of what the assessment will be and what sort of assistance they could provide for us. But I am very much thrilled that there is progress happening. Already my nerves are calmer.

Other things making me calm today:

1) The Electric Company is making a comeback. Yes. Check your local listing. Looks like it will be several back to back episodes so be sure to record so that we can discuss. I can not begin to describe the glee this brings me.

2) Reality tv overload! Hells yes I am watching The Bachelor. And hells yes I will be watching American Idol.

3) gouda cheese

4) my kick ass primary care physician called to check on me today. How cool is that? We talked briefly about my depression questions and I feel really good about her input.

5) I bought GM some new slippers (her old ones had been destroyed through her shuffling) and a new nightgown and I was really worried about how she would accept new things. Verdict: loves! Phew.

Other great news- for the next 5 days the temperature is not supposed to be above 70 degrees. YES!

I hope it all goes well tomorrow, that they will have the perfect level of care, right when you need it. And yes, everything seems easier to handle when we’re not sweating.

Woohoo! Yay for hopeful progress! I’m totally watching the Bachelor too. For some reason it doesn’t seem so raunchy this season. Or something. But yay tv!

I am glad that you are able to have help from hospice. Hospice can offer things such as respite care, weekly(or more) nursing visits, bathing care and things that assist you with activities of daily living. You are in my thoughts and I hope things work out the best for you and your family.

I saw last night on some random website that Electric Company was making a comeback. I’m geeked. Oddly enough, one day last week Frank and I were reminiscing about the show and were saying how they need to have a “Flashback PBS” with old episodes of Sesame Street, Electric Company, and 3-2-1 Contact. Of course, this segued into having a Flashback Nickelodeon, too.
