Music Monday: Nostalgia Edition

I don’t know about you guys, but some days I can’t remember what day of the week it is, but I can always sing you the Sesame Street pinball song up to 12. In fact I have a whole subsection of my mind that is completely dedicated to songs from my childhood. Humming these tunes make me calm and happy. And with that in mind I share what treasures I was able to find in that sweet cacophony of media hodgepodge within the youtube search feature. Get out your pop rocks & lick a sticks and enjoy…

Now for some flashback questions that have been driving me nuts:

1) What was the name of the show or character that featured a grown man wearing a unitard. Half of the unitard was a depiction of the human muscles and the other half were bones.

2) How were Smurfs born?

3) Are The Littles and The Borrowers connected in any way?

4) Why did Blowpop gum always disintegrate after 4-6 rotations of chewing?

5) How is it possible that the most awesome book series of my childhood is out of print? Sweet Pickles…come back to me.

Sol spontaneously started counting to 12 awhile ago, and I realized it was from that pinball song, which I used to sing to him when he was an little baby. Now he watches the video on YT. It’s confusing bc I remember there was a different one for each number, but most of the ones up show multiple numbers. Yours is 12 only. How many versions are out there?? The Spanish version is cool too!

And that 321Contact song haunted me for many years. For some reason it sticks in my brain.

I ALWAYS count using that song.

As to your questions, I wish I had the answers. But they’re lingering there at the edge of my mind, unwilling to come forward. Especially the one about the guy in the unitard — because I KNOW that one.

Man, this is going to drive me nuts.

According to my google-fu, it MAY have been on Captain Kangaroo, but while I watched that religiously, I can’t say as the two were linked in my head. ( http://www.madison.com/wsj/home/entertainment/281124 )

    delurking here…

SLIM GOODBODY. I am pretty sure that he was on Captain (Cap’n???) Kangaroo.

Weren’t the Smurfs part of some experiment? Or was that Strawberry Shortcake?

I think the Borrower’s name was changed for television cartoon medium. I hated that cartoon but still watched it.

Blowpop gum always turned to stone on me, but the stuff that disintegrated was Big League Chew!

if you can find me the little song-y thing ~ with the alligator king and his sons and the ruby rings and lemon drops and (i so know you have already found it by now) i will love you forever!!!

thank for the blast-from-the-past and the *12* pinball song. being someone with a touch of OCD, i tend to count things, and sometimes. dear lord, i am admitting this here… i count this little song in my head.

ok. now maybe you might not be friends with me for all the crazy i just exposed.
but just so you know…there is no law against crazy. (this is the best thing i have learned in psych so far!!!)

    xo

i sorta salvaged my lot of sweet pickles books from my mom’s house….they are in far from good condition (musty, mainly) but it’s been neat/weird flipping through them. who was your favorite/least favorite character??

    1. Slim Goodbody and according to his website he is still on tour! http://www.slimgoodbody.com

    2. Smurfs were born when there was a blue moon

    3. The Borrowers came out first and the T.V. show The Littles was based on them. I used to love that show!

    4. You can find some of the Sweet Pickles books at http://www.abebooks.com (my brother swears by this site for finding obsure titles!)

Now..do you remember the t.v. show The Charmings? I absolutely loved that show. It was Cinderella was married in modern time (1987) and the evil step mother lived in the dungeon with her magic mirror.

Love the pinball song. I was just rockin’ out to it while my VERY young husband watching it awe/shame/fear. I rock. I know it. Thanks for sharing.

I’m an asshole. Can I say that here? If not you can delete this and give me the innernet finger for being so crass. Sorry! Where was I? Oh, yes. I updated my template and didn’t put your blog in my Udderly Great links. I fixed it. I know, you can breathe easier now, right? Your new template is much improved in my opinion, but I already really liked it. Does that even make sense? I need to get some sleep. The swirlies remind me of fallopian tubes for some reason. I need a hobby.

Ooohhh…Sweet Pickles. When I was younger, I begged and begged and begged for my parents to order me the set of books that came in the plastic pickle bus box. I was so sure that the actual pickle bus would arrive at my door to deliver me my books. Wasn’t I disappointed when it was the UPS man!

Because I am not from USAnia I only recognised the counting to 12 one but as soon as I read “Sesame Street” and “12″ I sang the song. LOL. I must sing it for D. He is completely forgetting about 12 :)

Damn! Somebody already beat me to abebooks.com! They have LOTS of SP titles. And I want to thank you for reminding me of them. I’d forgotten them entirely but my brother LOVED them!!

As for 12, it’s my favorite Sesame Street clip on youtube. Natalie likes it but I *LOVE* it. We got the Sesame Street Old School DVD set 1 for Christmas from my sister, and it’s amazing how these songs are just embedded in my psyche. A new clip will come on and I totally KNOW the song. Haven’t seen it in decades, haven’t thought of it, but it’s IN ME at a cellular level!

Slim Goodbody always freaked me out. I imagined him going to a bar after work and trying to pick up women. With a name like Slim Goodbody he’d have no other choice than to be a creepy pickup dude.

Ok so I really don’t know the answers to any of your questions, nor do I remember the pinball song either. I did used to watch Sesame street but don’t know why I don’t remember that stuff. I just remember I was banned from watching the smurfs because they practiced sorcery and that was bad. As far as the sweet pickles book (s?) I don’t think I have ever heard of them either but there are a whole bunch listed on Ebay.

Everyone beat me to Slim Goodbody. :-(
When I count my homeroom students, of whom there are ten (it’s a charter school) they always sing the “12″ song. I guess it’s still around enough for 12 year olds to know it. :-)

I am sooo glad to find others who remember Sweet Pickles books!!! None of my friends had them, or remember them if they did. I think mine may still be packed in a box in my granddad’s attic, but there’s no telling what kind of condition they’re in.

Whoa. Flashback. It seems like we had a lot of similar interests as kids! I am a classic Sesame Street nut. I think most of the old school songs are embedded into my brains. The pinball 12 song is definitely one of my favorites. I always loved “I Got a New Way to Walk” with the cows and “One Way,” too. “Ladybug Picnic” and the crocodile song mentioned somewhere above are also faves. What about “You Really Got a Hold on Me” with Smokey Robinson and the green stalker U? I could go on and on.

In one of your earlier posts you mentioned having a SuperGrover mug. Grover is my absolute favorite character. As a baby I had a stuffed Grover that went with me everywhere. In most of my pictures age 2 and under I’m either holding “Go-go” or he’s somewhere nearby. A few weeks back I did a Flickr meme on my blog and for secret celebrity crush I put up a pic of SuperGrover.

Sweet Pickles- LOVE THEM! My favorite was Goose. Her book was “Goose Goofs Off.” She was a total and complete lazebag and her house was TRASHED. My mom used to call me Goose because I was such a messy kid. Judging from the clothes currently on my floor, the moniker is probably still appropriate.

Got something to say?
