The Bullet Points:

*Still sick. Have ended my love affair with Pepto (useless pink goop!) and am now swearing allegiance to immodium. Finally able to keep water down and therefore finally able to also resume my love affair with Vitamin W. (aha! now I see why I had such a horrible headache, well aside from the obvious dehydration)

*Ebay auctions via UTERUS brigade are going to be wrapping up soon. There will most likely be one final auction for this season. Including the money from direct donations you guys have raised over TWO thousand dollars for my FET! I would kiss you, but trust me, let’s just do an air kiss until I feel better. If you have any ideas for more fundraising please leave them at the beep.

*I didn’t sell my dresses at the garage sale, nor have I taken them to a consignment shop. The truth is that they all could use a good dry cleaning and since most of them are silk that won’t be cheap. But it needs to be done. I am hoping to get them cleaned and up on e-bay soon.

* BG Talula is not doing so great. She flat out refused to eat her RX food (science diet s/d for anyone interested) so the vet has prescribed Royal Canin Dissolution Formula. The goal is to have this rx’d food dissolve her kidney stone. The new food is a bit more appetizing to her, but she won’t really eat. So I have been blending it up with some water and then using a needle-less syringe (gee, isn’t it great to have a few of those handy?) to feed her. If she doesn’t get better she will need surgery. She seems a bit more alert and fit today so I am hoping the new food is working. And for the record, blending up stinky wet cat food and feeding it to your cat all the while fighting a stomach virus? Not recommended.

*I have a friend that is looking for some donated menopur for an IVF cycle at the end of May. If you have information please e-mail me.

*My skin is doing better. I have slacked off the topical treatments since Saturday, but no big damage was done. I was supposed to have my follow up yesterday, but no way was I able to leave the house.

*GM is doing ok. She has been completely thrown by Mother being home so much. Mother naps out in the den and sometimes I catch GM just staring at her. So I say, “Doesn’t [Mother's name] look comfortable?” and GM will say, “oh. is that what that is?”

*Monday night was supremely interesting. I was at my worst, in the bathroom sense, and so so exhausted. Even tho I have been sick I haven’t taken a break from caring for GM. There just has been a LOT more hand-washing and instant sanitizer used. So Monday I was sick in a bad way all day + had regular taking care of GM job + extra bonus taking care of Mother job + sick kitty job. By 7:30pm I was virtually in a coma on the couch in the den. And then I heard hairspray. For some reason GM had gotten herself up at 7:30pm and decided it was 7:30 in the morning. 2 minutes after I heard the hairspray here comes GM waltzing out into the den asking for her morning cup of coffee. ah!! She then got really upset with me and decided I was pulling a trick on her. It was just a bad night.

*Thank you for the feedback on the book review. I hope to be doing a lot more of them. I have offered my copy to another SMC blogger via e-mail, but in case she doesn’t claim it, please let me know if anyone is interested and I will send it your way.

* Question: what is a good (vegetarian) transition to eating after  stomach blech? I have stuff for soup- but will veggies be bad? (as in squash, onions, carrots, celery)

I’m so glad you’re feeling a titch better. All those veggies have a lot of water in them, so should help you rehydrate. Put some rice in your soup, too–rice is good when you’ve got an upset stomach.

Glad you’re on the mend! Sounds like you’re busy busy, hopefully things will start to settle back down. I don’t have much veggie advice. I’m horrible with getting any veggies in, let alone only veggies. ;)

After stomach blech I am all about eating plain yogurt. Preferably frozen and soft serve. But veggie soup would also be good, provided it was a broth-based soup and not a creamy soup.

I am with the vegetable soup and I second the rice. The first day after stomach blech you are supposed to eat bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast. I would also say cut your vegetables up really fine, maybe even puree them, so that your stomach won’t have to work so hard.

I swear by the BRAT diet when I’m recovering from stomach woes. My pediatrician recommended it years ago when my son had tummy troubles and it works for adults, too. BRAT stands for Bananas, Rice, Applesauce and Toast.
I don’t eat meat but I find some veggies, like onions, to be too difficult to digest after a bout of diarrhea. You’re better off starting with bland things.
I can’t believe you took care of your GM AND your mother while you were sick. When I’m illin’ I take to my bed and let everybody else sink or swim; except, of course, for Clem, the giant poodle. If I didn’t walk Clem she would just hold onto her urine and poop until she passed out or something. She’s insanely devoted to her routine and she would rather die than do something that might displease me.

Third on the BRAT diet. It is the best after tummy troubles. I even give it to my dogs when they don’t feel well, minus the bananas.
As for the kitty, when our big guy had urinary troubles he really liked to lay on a hot water bottle. It seemed to soothe him. He loved the s/d food though (he loved all food and that’s why he weighed 27 lbs), so I can’t help you there.

Veggies will be too hard on you. BRAT diet, my friend. Bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast.

Add a bit of either fresh or ground ginger to any broth based soup you may make but keep it bland the rest of the way. The ginger will ease your tummy and aid in digestion. And the idea of pureeing the veggies isn’t a bad one. But I would use only bland, water filled veggies. The squash, zuchinni, potatoes, rice, etc… Love you and hope you feel better really soon!!!!

Sorry to hear you are still having such a hard time with this stomach thing. I would stay with rice, potatoes, and bananas if you can stomach them, sort of a modified brat died.
Toast, crackers, and apple juice can sustain you longer than you think! So go slowly.
Amazing about the UTERUS auctions (I was sort of shocked that someone in France would want what I was selling, but you never know!).
    Feel better soon!

Hope you feel better soon! I would comment on the BRAT diet, but other brilliant folks have beaten me to it.

Sip some Sprite. Always makes me feel better!

screw vitamin w. - go for the gator*aid. It has electrolytes.

as far as “re-introducing foods” - think white - eat bland, white foods for a bit - toast, white rice, apples, eggwhies, yogurt, etc.

Once you’re better, you can go back to the “norm,” but just stay bland for now.

I was also going to suggest rice and adding some ginger to the soup. It does make a big difference on the digestive system. And broth. Broth is helpful. Since the veggies are in your soup, they should be fine; you just want to make sure they’re very cooked so that your tummy doesn’t have to do too much work.

I hope you start to feel better soon. The stomach ick is the worst (although I’m sure you dont’ need anyone to tell you that).

  13. LydiaNo Gravatar on April 30th, 2008 7:11 pm

Not too many vegetables… they tend to make you gasey, which means more stomach trouble. And for as much as I love Vitamin W, it’s ALL SUGAR, baby. It has just as many calories as Coke. You need real water to hydrate yourself.

I hope the worst of that awful stomach bug is over! I’m a big fat baby when it comes to headaches and stomach upsets. I just can’t seem to function well when I have either.

And drink more fluids than you think are necessary. Ginger ale will help with the nausea. I also pop an antihistamine when I have nausea and I’m ready to take a nap. It’s actually my secret hangover cure. Seriously. As for what to eat, I’m of the school of thought that you should have anything that sounds appetizing to you within reason. Avoid ultra fatty foods, of course, and I don’t really recommend milk products right now. Keep feeling better!

No raw food. No hot (temperature) or cold food. Room temperature/body temp is best. Stick with BRAT (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast) if you can. Hot or cold food will tell your body to get to work-and I think that you want your body to stop f’ing doing that at this point.

  16. CareNo Gravatar on May 1st, 2008 1:52 am

No clue on the veggies. I’m another who sticks with the BRAT diet, plus tea - lots and lots of tea. Hope you are feeling better soon. Awesome news on the Uterus Brigade auctions, and the skin improvement.

No ideas on the veggies…but what about oatmeal?

  18. MichellNo Gravatar on May 2nd, 2008 2:14 am

So sorry you have been so sick. Glad that you are doing better and hope it continues to improve. I think everyone pretty much covered the diet recommendations. Glad that Uterus Brigade auctions have went so well.

Got something to say?
