Yesterday a really crappy episode of the Tyra Banks show aired. The show was supposed to be educational, insightful, helpful and not sensational. Instead it was hysterical, cruel and well, lame.

My friend Sophia was recruited to be on the show via a nationally recognized infertility support organization. The show was presented to her as a venue for discussing serious topics. & of course we can all imagine how it turned out…(Read Mel’s take of how the show evolved here.) (Read even more detailed information here.)

I am super busy this morning with GM, but I had to share this priceless photo of Sophia on the show giving the look of pure annoyance (love her!). Let’s have a discussion within the comments. Who watched it/ What did you think/ What action, if any needs to be taken as a follow up?

If there’s any way to see it I would love to…we got home and turned on the T.V. and saw the end, not the part where Sophia speaks.

The part we saw was certainly awful. Awful like Oprah. It is so weird that these shows are so bad when there are so many ways to make them so good. I feel like the response is to get the good information out there but I feel at a loss about how to do that.

I am betting that photo comes from the moment at the end when that blond lady came out and said she was 40 and oops! forgot to have kids and she just adopted the most perfect little white baby girl! oh la la! and they brought the baby out. I gave Tyra that look too.

I’m coming back to post more later today because we only watched until the first commercial break. We’re in the middle of Trista. My favourite moment so far is the parading out of the baby. On a show about infertility. And from what I understand based on what she said, is not infertile but couldn’t time out intercourse correctly with her husband due to his job?

Josh loved the first “coming up” scene where you see Tyra in absolute shock over the woman who isn’t taking her birth control pills. He dryly commented that you would think Tyra could retain the information collected by producers in creating the show and not look quite so surprised that her guest is doing anything to have a baby…at any cost.

So is this episode about infertility at all?

I haven’t seen the show, but how gorgeous is Sophia??

i saw only the tail end. i loved S’s look, too, when they paraded that little baby out at the end. tyra said something like, “well if we’re going to do a show on motherhood at all costs, i had to bring out… this woman”… the woman came out and said something like (i kid you not)… “i lived a full life and then realized i was 40 and oops forgot to have a baby… i didn’t have a partner with whom i wanted to have a baby… but i wouldn’t do anything like *gasp* artificial insemination… not when there are so many children out there in the world who *need* to be adopted!” Then did they bring out the HIV-positive, nonwhite, five-year-old foster kid suffering from attachment disorder whom she adopted? You know, one of those kids who really *needed* to be adopted? Of course not, she brings out a 2-WEEK-OLD WHITE BABY GIRL. We can only presume the baby was also 100% healthy b/c if she weren’t, ya know Tyra would’ve praised her for it. Yeah right, I bet no one was lining up to adopt that little newborn. Ain’t she a saint, unlike those *selfish* women undergoing fertility treatments? (I hope this is apparent, but I mean this in the most sarcastic way possible.)

It was twisted to end a show on infertility with “you can always adopt.” Gag. Hack. Choke.

And before that, they announced they gave every audience member some book on fertility and conception, which seemed to cover all that very basic stuff. I’m sure that was very helpful to all the infertiles there in the audience. I’m sure they never bothered to look into things like… OPKs or tracking their cycles or getting their FSH tested. Uh huh.

just wanted to add that there is also a long rant about the ridiculousness of the episode going on over at fertility friend. it pissed off a lot of people.

    That’s our Sophia!

Ugh – I don’t know if I want to see it. because I might throw something at the screen.

But just to “qualify” the ENTIRE show – let us remember that a SUPERMODEL, who’s episode recap states: “WHAT TYRA WORE” may not be the best avenue for infertility.

    I’m just sayin’…

I think Tyra is a complete and utter idiot on any given day and on any given topic. I didn’t see this, but I can only imagine how terrible it was. She really annoys the living shit out of me, but most stupid people do… : 0 )

  10. I know it sucked but how cool is it to see Sophia’s picture from the show on your blog like that?!?!?

Sorry, I’m feeling all fourth grade here…

Sophia’s expressions were the best thing about this show…shame they cut out her actual story. It just made me so sad and angry. Who is their target audience? So many of us suffer from infertility why do a show that would hurt us instead of inspire us? I completely resent Trista & Ryan’s claims that they had fertility problems. ugh…the whole thing. Not that any of us are surprised.

Your friend is a total hottie. I sooo would not want to be on the receiving end of one of those looks though!

  13. amandaNo Gravatar says:

OMG, i just read all the posts about this–how awful! Your friend sounds like she kept her cool, but i can’t imagine how disappointing that whole experience must have been. Because, you know, adopting is SO incredibly easy for all of us, why do we even bother having kids of our own? Geez.

Oh, and i agree with Laura that Tyra is a headcase. i can barely stand to look at her, she annoys me that badly.
